Repairs
Addition of features

DED (Direct Energy Deposition) additive manufacturing processes such as the CLAD® process from IREPA LASER can be used to manufacture, repair or locally reinforce functional parts (or textures) by locally depositing metallic materials. They make it possible to locally make complex functional shapes on double-curvature parts delivered from other manufacturing processes.

Repairs and addition of features

The CLAD® additive manufacturing process makes it possible to repair or add functions by locally depositing material on critical areas of mechanical parts subject to high stress or strain.

  • Defect correction
  • Improvement of mechanical performance
  • Change in surface properties depending on strain

The material in powder form is injected in a nozzle coaxial with the laser beam, and then fused to create a deposit on the substrate.

This process is used for:

  • locally reinforcing and repairing parts
  • adding new shapes or features to parts delivered by other processes (machining, additive manufacturing, sheet metal working etc.)

Repairs and addition of functions in detail

What is the addition of functions?

The addition of functions is a technique that uses CLAD® (direct additive laser construction) additive manufacturing developed by IREPA LASER, which is part of the DED (Direct Energy Deposition) family of additive manufacturing processes.

The method makes it possible to melt metallic powders on an existing functional part using laser technology to build additional 3D shapes or textures on the surface of flat or double-curvature parts. The aim is to enable a new function through additive manufacturing.

Building is possible with many types of metallic material in the form of powder, such as stainless steel, titanium alloys (Ti), nickel bases (Ni) or some tool steels.

That technique of adding functions has applications in several industries such as aviation, space, medical engineering or the energy industry.

Materials regularly used:

  • stainless steel (316L, 304 etc.)
  • Ti alloys  (TA6V etc.)
  • Ni base (Inconel 718, 713, etc.)
  • tool steel

Benefits

  • Longer life of parts
  • Repairs of used or worn parts
  • Repairs of high added-value parts
  • Adaptation of the nature of the material depending on strain (friction, wear and tear, corrosion etc.)
  • Localised mechanical reinforcement
  • Saves high added-value materials

Advantages

  • Very low dilution
  • Dense depositions
  • Localised treatment
  • Low deformation
  • Improved surface condition
  • Large choice of materials available

Examples of applications

Parts are repaired in different areas of industry: automotive (valves, cylinder heads, anti-corrosion coating), defence (arms), energy (drilling tools, turbine blades), aviation (dynamic seals, MRO), medical engineering (prostheses, implants).

Aeronautics

Repairs of engine parts

The CLAD® additive manufacturing process developed by IREPA LASER is based on the depositing of metallic powders, and makes it possible to repair parts by reconstructing damaged or worn parts.

Advantages

  • Fine and localised repairs, including of delicate parts
  • Number of approved materials: Ni base, Ti base etc.
  • Life span increased five fold

Energy

Building up of blades

Localised improvement of the mechanical characteristics of the Z profiles of blades.
Because the thermal energy of the laser is controlled, the integrity of the substrate is protected.

Advantages

  • Management of the thermal impact
  • Reduction of dilution
  • Dense depositions that are metallurgically linked to the substrate
  • Automatic and rugged process

Automotive

Robotised building up of aluminium cylinder heads

The laser building up process is used to locally repair cylinder head gaskets.

Advantages

  • Longer life of parts
  • Localised mechanical reinforcement
  • Wide range of materials adapted to strain
  • Process that can be automated

Formations

The CLAD® (direct additive laser construction) process offers the possibility to work on parts with large or small volumes, while guaranteeing high precision and excellent metallurgical qualities.

Our training modules are based on alternating theory lessons and practical demonstrations on machines.
Using our machine base, we guarantee the use of practical case studies for a better understanding of the processes.
